Description

Numbers 8-28 and attached railings are a row of terraced houses dating from the early 19th century, located on the east side of Hampton Place, Brighton. They are constructed of stucco, with the roofs largely concealed by a parapet.

The houses are three storeys high, with a basement level, and each has a one-window range. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication, and features a round-arched entrance with a fanlight and doorcase. The ground-floor windows have a segmental-arched shape, set within a recessed segmental-arched panel of plain stucco. A storey band is present, and the first and second floor windows are flat-arched, flanked by pairs of Ionic pilasters that are irregularly disposed. A balcony with a cast-iron balustrade is positioned in front of the first-floor windows. The building is finished with an entablature and a blocking course, and includes stacks to the party walls. Cast-iron area railings with spearhead finials are attached to the front.

Variations are evident between the individual properties. Numbers 9 and 10 have flat-arched entrances and Ionic pilasters flanking only the first-floor windows, with their own entablature but less elaborate second-floor windows with plain Doric pilasters, now lacking some details, a cornice, and blocking course. Number 12 has decorative glazing bars to the fanlight, a canted bay window to the basement, ground, and first floors, an altered second-floor window with a cornice on consoles, and only one pilaster to the first and second floors. Number 14 retains decorative glazing to its fanlight and sashes of its original design incorporating margin lights to all windows. Numbers 16-18 also have sashes of their original design with margin lights, and Number 18 additionally features decorative glazing to the fanlight and a cornice on consoles above the second-floor windows. Number 20 has decorative glazing to its fanlight, a cornice on consoles above the second-floor windows, and lacks area railings. Number 22 has decorative glazing to its fanlight and railings only to the steps. Number 24 has a cornice on consoles above the second-floor windows and no area railings. Number 26 has sashes of its original design to the first floor with margin lights. Number 28 has a flat-arched entrance, lacks pilasters, and features a shallow segmental oriel to the first-floor windows with sashes of its original design.

The interior of the properties has not been inspected.
