Description
Numbers 1-13 and attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from circa 1865, located in Roundhill Crescent, Brighton. The houses are constructed of stucco scored to resemble ashlar, with a tile roof on number 1, while the remaining roofs are concealed behind a parapet.
The houses are three storeys high, with a basement level, accommodating three windows per property. The design incorporates full-height pilasters that are rusticated on the ground floor and feature two blocks at cornice level; the lower block is bracketed. Steps lead to a round-arched entrance with a moulded archivolt, a fanlight, and a panelled door. A springing band connects the entrance archivolt to the round-arched ground-floor windows, which also have panelled aprons. First and second-floor windows are flat-arched with moulded architraves. A bracketed balcony with a cast-iron balustrade of scrolling foliage is located on the first floor, and the second floor has small bracketed sills with cast-iron window-guards. A cornice and parapet tops the facades, with stacks built into the party walls. Walls and corniced gate piers lead to the steps, and the area is enclosed by cast-iron railings with spearhead finials.
Individual houses exhibit variations. Number 1 has dormers in a mansard roof. Numbers 3, 5, 7, and 9 have simplified mouldings, while number 5 also lacks a panelled door. Number 11 has simplified mouldings to the first and second-floor windows. Number 13 has a two-storey porch to the side, featuring a round-arched entrance with a plain springing band and a keystone, alongside three round-arched ground-floor windows, also with plain springing bands and keystones. This property has lost some of its architrave mouldings.
The interior of the properties has not been inspected.
