Description
The walls to the former Diocesan Training College, built in 1854 and likely modified later, are constructed of brick, stone, and knapped flint. These walls stretch from the corner of Shaftesbury Road and Viaduct Road to a point halfway along the frontage of the listed building on Ditchling Road. The design features panels of knapped flint framed by yellow brick, topped with stone coping, and flanked by low buttresses. The main entrance in the middle of the south wall is highlighted by square piers that transition to an octagonal shape near the top, finished with a stone cap. Additional square piers are located at the two corners facing Viaduct Road, as well as along Ditchling Road where the wall steps up between the piers. The last three bays on Ditchling Road have a different design, made of knapped flint set in mortar and framed and capped with red brick. These walls are included for their group value.
