Description

These are gate piers, dating from 1822, and originally part of the southern boundary wall of the Royal Gardens, designed for James Ireland. They are constructed of stucco and are square in plan, with chamfered plinths. The piers feature round-arched niches and entablatures incorporating triglyphs and guttae, along with deep moulded cornices and blocking courses. The walls originally flanking the piers have been altered following damage caused by a hurricane in 1987, and no longer possess significant architectural or historic interest. Later, likely late 19th or early 20th century, gates were inserted, having been brought in from another location. Figures of a lion and lioness, previously present on the gate piers, were removed in 1987.
