Description

Numbers 20-23 and attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating to the early 19th century, located in Brighton. They are built with painted mathematical tiles and stucco to some bays, with slate roofs. The houses are three storeys high, with a basement and dormers, each having a single window.

The design of each house follows a common pattern. They feature flat-arched entrances with overlights framed by Tuscan pilasters, supporting boxed cornice porches with scroll brackets. A full-height segmental bay rises to the left of each entrance, with tripartite sash windows of original design (6 x 6 panes to the centre, 2 x 2 to the sides). A single window is positioned in the basement under the bay. Number 20 has had its original segmental bay replaced with a canted bay, and the spandrels of this bay are faced with stucco. Later, in the late 19th or early 20th century, the sashes of the second floor were replaced in Number 20.

Number 23 has undergone alterations at least twice in the 19th century. It features an entrance flanked by fluted Tuscan pilasters and a simpler cornice porch. To the left of the entrance is a very broad segmental bay with fluted Tuscan pilasters where it joins the front wall. The ground floor bay appears to be from the late 19th or early 20th century; the first-floor segmental bay is narrower and is not aligned with the ground floor bay. This first-floor bay has floor-to-ceiling windows with original sashes (6 x 6 panes to the centre, 4 x 4 panes to the sides), and a balcony. The second-floor segmental bay is narrower still, but is centrally aligned with the other bays, and is identical to those found elsewhere in the terrace. A raised parapet and coping distinguish this house from the rest of the terrace. Dormer windows, with flat arches, were added to the roofs of numbers 20, 21, and 22 in the 20th century, one to each. Chimney stacks are positioned on the party walls.

The interior has not been inspected. Railings are present to the areas and stairs of all but Number 23; the area in front of Number 23 has been removed and replaced with the broad ground-floor bay.
