Description
Number 19 Sewer Ventilation Column is a cast-iron structure located on the east side of Rotherfield Road at its junction with Talbot Road in Carshalton, built around 1896-1903. It was constructed by W Macfarlane & Co for a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham, and it is one of about 28 remaining in Carshalton.
The cylindrical column stands approximately 9 meters high and is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. It consists of two conjoined lengths of pipe connected with a flanged joint. Atop the capital is an ornate arrow, which is believed to either orient the vent into the wind or indicate the sewer's direction. This is topped by a ball with vents facing all four directions. Originally, the column would have had a tall finial encircled with a coronet, but these decorative elements are no longer present. The pedestal bears the inscription ‘W MACFARLANE & CO, GLASGOW’.
