Description

Number 20 Sewer Ventilation Column is a sewer ventilation column built between 1896 and 1903, located on the south side of St Andrew's Road in Carshalton, London Borough of Sutton. It was constructed by W Macfarlane & Co as part of a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham, and it is one of about 28 similar columns still remaining in Carshalton.

The column is made of cast iron and stands approximately 9 meters high. It is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. The structure consists of two conjoined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint. Atop the capital is an ornate arrow, which is believed to either orient the vent into the wind or indicate the direction of the sewer. Above this arrow is a ball with vents facing in all four directions, and the entire column is capped with a tall finial encircled by a coronet. Although there is no visible manufacturer stamp on this column, many similar examples in Carshalton bear the name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO, GLASGOW’.
