Description
The sewer ventilation column, built between 1896 and 1903, was constructed by W Macfarlane & Co based on a design by Baldwin Latham. It is one of about 28 such columns remaining in Carshalton. Made of cast iron, the cylindrical column stands approximately 9 meters tall and consists of two joined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint. It rests on a circular, decorative, moulded plinth. At the top, the column features a Corinthian-type capital, supporting the ventilation apparatus. This apparatus includes an ornate arrow, which may either orient the vent into the wind or indicate the sewer's direction, along with a ball that has four projecting circular vents, a filigree crown, and a finial. While there is no visible manufacturer stamp on this column, several similar examples in Carshalton bear the name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO GLASGOW’.
