Description
The chapel at St Philomena's Convent, built between 1899 and 1900 and designed by E Ingress Bell, is a rectangular structure featuring a gabled roof and a tower at the southeast end. The building has brick walls with stone dressings and knapped flint work, comprising a nave, chancel, and east aisle chapel. The entrance is located on the south gable end, showcasing a moulded two-centred stone doorway flanked by single light windows with cusped heads. Above the entrance, there is a stone statue of the Virgin in a niche with a stone canopy, surrounded by two additional windows with cusped heads, all enclosed by a stone arch.
To the east and partly at the rear, a brick tower is adorned with decorative courses of flint and stone, topped with an octagonal lantern and a short broach spire. The west front consists of eight bays, each defined by a brick pilaster and hexafoil, with a moulded plinth and toothed brick courses above the windows. A triple lancet window is present in the chancel. Inside, there is an organ loft above the vestibule at the south end of the nave, and a pieta is located in the vestibule. The nave features pointed arches and a vaulted roof, with the walls of the nave, side aisle, and vestibule entirely lined with a finely executed mosaic decoration, which appears to be inspired by Byzantine sources. The chancel walls, floor, and altar table are lined with inlaid marble in the Italian style.
