Description
No 3 West Street is a building dating from around 1786, originally known as the Swan Inn. Historical records from the Manorial Court indicate that the inn was demolished and rebuilt in that year. The building has two storeys and features a hipped roof covered with old tiles. Its walls are primarily made of red brick, with the east wall and part of the north wall rendered.
On the east front facing the street, there is one modern three-light window on the ground floor. The north front has modern wooden casements on the upper level. The ground floor front wall remains intact behind a light modern workshop addition, which includes, from left to right, a three-light sash window, a door, a small sash window, a six-flush-panelled door, another door, and a window.
This building is part of a group that includes the Water Pavilion at Carshalton House, the boundary wall to Carshalton House, and other properties along West Street, specifically Nos 3 to 11 (odd) and No 15, as well as Nos 2 to 12 and 18 to 24 (even) West Street, and the old Rectory on Festival Walk.
