Description

POUND STREET 1. 4430 (North-West Side) CARSHALTON Hermitage or Grotto at Carshalton House TQ 2764 SE 20/162 16.3.54. II* 2. Early C18, probably before 1721. One storey, ashlar. 1-3-1 openings, the centre 3 in full height projection. The outer openings are open windows with segmental heads, band surrounds and aprons, the centre ones round-headed open doorways with square block rustications, and vermiculated pilasters supporting a frieze and cornice overall. The interior contains passages vaulted in stone. General note: The Gardens are an important early example, possibly by Charles Bridgeman, of the landscape style with avenue drive placed off-centre from the house, naturalistic lake and ornamental buildings.
