Description
The sewer ventilation column, built between 1896 and 1903, is situated on the west side of the junction of Meadow Road with Westmead Road. It was constructed by W Macfarlane & Co as part of a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham.
This cast-iron structure stands approximately 9 meters high and features a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. The column consists of two joined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint. Atop the capital is an ornate arrow that helps orient the vent into the wind or indicates the line of the sewer. Above this is a ball fitting with four circular vents, a decorative filigree crown, and a finial. The shaft is moulded with the heavily-overpainted maker’s name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO GLASGOW’.
