Description
The sewer ventilation column on Cator Road was built between 1896 and 1903 by W Macfarlane & Co, following a design by Baldwin Latham. It is one of approximately 28 such columns still standing in Carshalton.
This cylindrical column is about 9 meters tall and made of cast iron. It consists of two joined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint and rests on a circular, decorative, moulded plinth. At the top, the column features a Corinthian-type capital, which supports the ventilation apparatus. This apparatus is adorned with an ornate arrow, likely used to direct the vent into the wind or to indicate the sewer's alignment. It also includes a ball with four circular vents, a filigree crown, and a finial. While there is no visible manufacturer stamp on this column, many similar columns in Carshalton bear the name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO GLASGOW’.
