Description
The premises of the South Eastern Electricity Board, located on the east side of The Square in Carshalton, date from the early to mid 18th century. This building is thought to have been a garden temple or orangery associated with Carshalton House, possibly inspired by a design from the architect Leoni. A more elaborate design by Leoni for a greenhouse in the Ionic order at Carshalton House is featured in "some designs for Buildings both Publick and Private," published around 1729.
The building is a single storey constructed of Roman cement, featuring three blocked windows. It has a central Doric tetrastyle portico with a pediment and back pilasters, along with a blocked tympanum. The eaves cornice is made of wood, and the roof is slate, hipped at the east end. Doric angle piers are present at both ends of the elevation.
