Description
Carshalton Public Library, formerly Carshalton Council Offices, was opened in 1908 and designed by R Frank Atkinson and W Willis Gale. The building features a two-storey entrance front with five window bays and a deep hipped slate roof. It has a heavy paired modillion eaves cornice and is constructed of red and blue brick, with banding, long and short quoins, and a plinth. The windows are 2-light leaded casements with wood frames, and the ground floor windows are transomed. A pair of semi-circular stone steps leads up to the central doorway, which is made of stone and flanked by rusticated pilasters. The doorway features a large keystone and an open segmental pediment, with two stone scrolls rising above the pediment to frame the central first-floor window. The south-east elevation also has two storeys and three window bays. The northern part of the library includes the former Fire Station, which was also designed by Atkinson.
