Description

Nos 5 and 7 on High Street in Carshalton are a pair of buildings with a history dating back to 1603. The current structure features a 19th-century exterior that incorporates a timber-framed building from the 17th century. The front is stuccoed and consists of three storeys with three window bays, flanked by giant pilasters at each end. The roof is hipped, with the right side covered in modern pantiles and the left side in slates, and it has overhanging eaves. The second floor has sashes without glazing bars, while the first floor features 2-light casements. The ground floor retains its original wall but has been altered by late 19th-century shop additions on either side, with a passageway in between. At the end of the passageway, there is a half-glazed door with margin lights and a felted hood supported by brackets. Inside, the timber-framed construction is visible in the center room on the first floor, and there is plank and muntin panelling in the passageway of No 5. The staircases date from the early to mid-19th century, and there are smaller two-storey 19th-century additions at the rear. The property also includes a cellar. Nos 3 to 7 form a group with Nos 12 to 20 on the opposite side of High Street.
