Description
Anne Boleyn's or Bullen's Well is a historical site located in Carshalton. According to local tradition, the well is associated with Anne Boleyn, suggesting that her horse's prancing caused a spring to rise in this location. Another interpretation is that "Boleyn" may derive from "Bolonia," the name of a family who were lords of the manor during medieval times. The well features a circular head made of stock brick, which is now enclosed by iron railings. The well head itself has been blocked up and is currently planted with shrubs.
Anne Boleyn's Well, along with Madeley Cottage and the railings, is part of a group that includes several nearby structures such as the road bridge, Leoni bridge, culvert, and retaining walls to Carshalton Ponds, No 1 High Street, entrance gates to the Grove, Honeywood Museum, wall and gatehouse, Honeywood Walk, Greyhound Inn, wall to the east of Greyhound Inn, Church of All Saints, the north churchyard wall, and Nos 6 and 12 High Street.
