Description

The Greyhound Inn is a building located on Pound Street in Carshalton. The right-hand part of the inn appears to be from the early 19th century, but it is likely a remodelling of an earlier structure. It stands two storeys high and is finished in stucco, featuring three sash windows. The central window is part of a full-height, three-storey projection that is topped with a Dutch gable. The building has quoins and a central Jacobean-style feature that frames the doors and window, complete with pilasters, cornices, and strapwork ornament. The wings also have quoins, and the building is topped with a modillion cornice, a parapet, and an old tile roof. The right-hand return also has a Dutch gable.

The projecting portion on the left is from the 18th century and features painted weatherboarding. It has two storeys with four sash windows on the ground floor that have old panelled shutters, while the first floor has two large overhanging canted sash bays. A dentil eaves cornice runs around the bays, and the roof is tiled with a hip to the right. Historical records indicate that in October 1707, "John Watson at the sign of the Greyhound" was listed as a voluntary rate payer.

The Greyhound Inn is part of a group of listed buildings that includes the wall to the east of the inn, the Church of All Saints, the North Churchyard wall, and Nos 6 and 12 (Coach and Horses). It is also grouped with Anne Boleyn's Well, St Mary's, Madeley Cottage in Church Hill, No 1 High Street, the entrance gates to The Grove, the road bridge, Leoni bridge, culvert and retaining walls to Carshalton Ponds, and Honeywood Museum along with its walls, Honeywood Walk, and The Gate House.
