Description
The east and west churchyard walls in Carshalton are notable structures primarily made of brick. The east wall, located to the south of No 4 High Street, is a tall brick wall with capping, likely built in the 19th century. It extends south from No 4 as far as the corner behind No 13 The Square, where it turns west. This section features brick pilasters and two brick piers with capping. At the western corner, there is a brick pier inscribed with the words: "To the glory of God and in loving memory of Palliser Barrow all the land south and west of this spot was given to extend the churchyard by Samuel Barrow JP of The Grove, Carshalton, April 1915."
The north-west wall of the churchyard, which also serves as a boundary with Madeley Cottage and St Mary's, is part of the former boundary wall of Carshalton Park and dates back to the 18th century. This wall is made of red brick with some areas of patching and continues south and west to the rear of Nos 20 and 21 Church Hill, extending north to the west entrance of the churchyard by Madeley Cottage. The entrance is flanked by wide, low stuccoed piers. Additionally, to the north of this entrance, there is a low stuccoed wall with a plinth and capping that extends as far as the north Churchyard Walk.
The church and its surrounding walls, including those of No 4 High Street and the wall to the south of No 6 High Street, form a cohesive group in the area.
