Description

This is a low, wide building of probable 17th or earlier timber-frame construction, with a brick front, located on the south side of High Street in Carshalton. Number 16 has been stuccoed. The building features a steep, plain tile gabled roof, and the east return is weather-boarded. Number 16 has an eaves band, a paired sash window on the first floor, and a projecting six-light shop front with a central doorway, featuring a segmental head over each light, as well as a fascia and cornice. There are two rear extensions to Number 16, one with clapboard cladding and the other with brick cladding, both with hipped plain tile roofs and sash windows at their south ends. Numbers 18 and 20 have three boxed two-light casement dormers, and on the first floor, three splayed three-light bay windows with a continuous dentil eaves cornice. These windows have plate glass. A carriageway is located at the left-hand end of the building. Numbers 12 to 20 (even) form a group with numbers 3 to 7 (odd) on the opposite, north side of High Street.
