Description
Number 21 Sewer Ventilation Column, located on the north side of St James Road in Carshalton, is a cast-iron structure built between 1896 and 1903. It was constructed by W Macfarlane & Co as part of a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham, and it is one of about 28 remaining in Carshalton.
The cylindrical column stands approximately 9 meters high and is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. It consists of two joined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint. Atop the capital is an ornate arrow, which may either orient the vent into the wind or indicate the sewer's direction. Above this, there is a ball with vents facing in all four directions, topped by a tall finial encircled with a coronet. The pedestal bears the maker's name, which is heavily over-painted but appears to read, ‘W MACFARLANE & CO, GLASGOW’.
