Description

Number 14 Sewer ventilation column on Lavender Road is a cast-iron structure built between 1896 and 1903 by W Macfarlane & Co for a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham. It is one of about 28 remaining in Carshalton.

The cylindrical column stands approximately 9 meters tall and is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, moulded base, and an enriched capital. It consists of two joined lengths of pipe connected with a flanged joint. Above the capital, there is an ornate arrow, which is believed to help orient the vent into the wind or indicate the sewer's direction. At the top, there is a ball with vents facing in four directions, topped with a tall finial surrounded by a filigree coronet. The base of the column is marked with the name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO, GLASGOW’.
