Description
The Beddington and Wallington War Memorial is a notable structure made from Portland stone, featuring bronze plaques and a base constructed of blue Staffordshire engineering bricks. The memorial consists of a tapering pillar that rises from a rectangular plinth, which is set on a single-stepped base.
The carvings on the memorial are designed in the Art Deco style, with a cross depicted in low relief on the front of the pillar. This relief deepens as the pillar narrows towards the top, while the base of the pillar showcases a carved sunburst design.
Bronze plaques are set into recessed panels on the faces of the plinth, commemorating those who served in the First World War. The main dedicatory inscription on one plaque reads: "1914 – 1918/ TO THE/ GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ BEDDINGTON/ AND/ WALLINGTON/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ THEY DIED THAT WE/ MIGHT LIVE." Three additional plaques list the names of the fallen, along with a small plaque bearing one further name.
After the Second World War, another bronze dedication plaque was added, which states: "1939 – 1945/ TO THE MEMORY/ OF THE MEN, WOMEN/ AND CHILDREN/ OF THIS BOROUGH/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES/ IN THE SECOND/ WORLD WAR/ AND WHOSE NAMES/ ARE RECORDED IN THE/ BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE." A smaller plaque on one side of the base of the pillar also carries names.
