787/0/10181 STAINES ROAD 31-JUL-03 Milestone opposite Islay Gardens

II Milestone. Cast iron. C. 1834. Triangular in section, with an arched head inscribed LONDON 11; beneath this is the inscription HESTON PARISH. The pedimented sides bear the inscriptions STAINES 6 and HOUNSLOW 1. HISTORY: one of a sequence of similar milestones laid out along the London - Staines road, one of the principal old roads leading into the capital. The comparable example opposite Star Road, Hounslow bears the founders' mark of RU & J Barrett, London 1834.
