Description
The former married quarters, known as Building 16, at Hounslow Barracks, were constructed in 1860. This disused building is made of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings, featuring brick axial stacks and a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan with single-room apartments accessed from a verandah, which includes end ablution rooms in towers.
The exterior of the building is three storeys high and has a symmetrical front with a 2:18:2-bay range. The ends of the building are set forward and connected by a full-width iron verandah supported by round columns encased in concrete, with plain railings. There is a round-arched central passage with a dogleg iron stair, and the windows are 6/6-pane sashes with red rubbed brick lintels. The returns and rear feature a moulded band at the second floor and eaves, with early 20th-century square ablution towers added on either side of a five-bay central range that includes a round archway and a panel dated 1860.
The interior has not been inspected, but the plan indicates single-room apartments. Historically, these quarters were among the first purpose-built married accommodations introduced at barracks following the army reforms after the Crimean War. Each room was designed for a single family and included a bed for adults and a crib, along with two cupboards and a range; shared ablution facilities were located in the projecting sections. This building is comparable to large philanthropic housing projects, such as those by the Peabody Trust, aimed at providing compact, improved housing. It is included for its historic interest in both a military context and as an early example of social housing.
