Former Officers Mess And Quarters To Hounslow Cavalry Barracks

The Former Officers' Mess and Quarters to Hounslow Cavalry Barracks is a building dating from around 1793, designed by James Johnson. Originally built as officers' quarters, it was significantly extended by C. B. Ewart in 1876 to include an officers' mess. The central part of the building retains its earlier E plan layout but has been refronted to the south.

The north side of the original 1793 block features two storeys and nine bays, constructed from multi-coloured stock brick. There is a four-bay west wing that includes a ground storey verandah supported by cast-iron columns. The south front, completed in 1876, showcases a three-storey central section with fifteen bays, arranged in a 4:7:3 pattern, flanked by two-storey wings. The central five bays are highlighted by a gabled porch with columns that have foliage capitals. The side wings, which consist of four and three bays, are set forward and also gabled. The building is made of yellow stock brick with white bands, featuring segmental and arched window heads. The central block has eaves-breaking gabled dormers on the second floor flanking the bays. The roofs are slated and include prominent chimney stacks.
