Description

The former stable ranges along the east and west sides of the former parade ground at Hounslow Cavalry Barracks were built around 1793 by James Johnson. These stable ranges include troopers' dormitories above and feature a verandah that was added in 1861 by Lothian Nicholson, Royal Engineers. The buildings are two stories high and constructed from multicoloured stock brick. Inside, there are cast iron internal columns, and some walls still have tack-hooks and hay-baskets. The windows vary in design but are mostly cambered-arched double-hung barred sash windows. The roofs are hipped and covered with five layers of slate, extending over the first floor of the verandahs. Hitching rings can still be found on the outer walls. There are areas of Staffordshire Blue paviors along the east and west sides, which include urine tunnels. The ground floor has been altered, and the interior has undergone some changes. Each range features a vaulted passageway through the middle, and the eaves have been blocked.
