Description
The stable courtyard range dates to 1774 and forms a group value feature. It comprises stables arranged around a square cobbled courtyard, which incorporates diagonal drainage channels and a central drain. The building is one storey high with attics, the attic space being broken only by a projecting carriage archway. It is constructed of red brick in an irregular bond, with a dentil cornice, sandstone dressings to the openings and plinth, and a renewed Welsh slate roof.
The west entrance elevation has five bays, the central bay featuring a two-storey carriage archway faced in ashlar and rusticated with a radiating keystone pattern. A central pediment with simple cornice tops the arch, and beneath it, the date 1774 is embossed. The upper section of the archway is enclosed in timber to provide access from the flanking attic storeys. Four multi-paned casement windows are symmetrically placed, each with a stone lintel and central keystone. There is a sandstone mounting to the right. The east elevation features four double wooden doors leading to former coach houses; the door on the extreme left is a late 20th-century alteration, while the others have stone dressings to the jambs. A single multi-paned casement window has a stone lintel and keystone, and two small dormers light the attic. The south elevation has a central archway leading to the estate yard, again with the upper section filled in to provide flooring at attic level. Two windows, similar in detail to the other elevations, are positioned on either side, with the corner windows being former doorways. A dormer window is located centrally, and two brick stacks are positioned at either end. The north elevation has three doorways and two windows, all with stone lintels and central keystones, and three brick stacks mark the corners. The external elevations are primarily blank brick walls, except for the east and west ranges, which feature single Diocletian windows with stone surrounds.
Internally, the west and south ranges accommodate stabling, a combination of loose boxes and regular stables. These are characterized by stanchions articulated by rows of arcaded Tuscan stone columns, curved wooden internal partitions, and individual cast-iron manger baskets set within arched recesses. Many stalls have fine plank doors with iron grills. Internal walkways are defined by York paving stones, along with a drainage channel, while the stall floors are cobbled. The internal brickwork is whitewashed. A portion of the south range is now converted into offices. The north range contains heated tack rooms with wooden panelling, cupboards, and pegs, alongside two smaller stables. A room to the far right has a large chimney breast, which now contains a late 18th-century Neoclassical cast-iron grate; this area may have been subdivided and used as a dairy at one time. The east range houses coach houses, with part of it open to the roof, exposing three king post trusses. The attic storey is accessible via a combination of stone and wooden staircases and provides spartan, unheated accommodation.
