Description
The garden walls on the south side of the formal garden include gate piers, gates, and an alcove. The wall is constructed from a mix of brick bonds, featuring sections in English Garden Wall bond and Flemish bond. The bricks are primarily red or reddish brown, with various sizes indicating different areas of rebuilding and repair. A flat stone parapet runs along part of the wall, which is adjacent to the walled garden to the south. The wall features a dentil cornice and a coped brick parapet. It returns at a right angle, creating a corner with a seating alcove that has a shaped opening leading to a curved recess. The wall connects to a pair of square stone gate piers topped with stone ball finials. Stone steps lead up to restored early 18th-century gates, which were originally placed to end a vista along the Moss Walk and through the rose garden. The wall continues and ends at an iron screen.
