Description
The garden walls, steps, gate piers, and gates adjoining South Hill Park on the east form a walled garden with retaining walls, steps, and gates that enclose a rectangular parterre garden. This structure dates from the 19th century.
The walls are made of orange brick in English bond with stone dressings. The east side features a wall with six bays, including pilasters with stone bases and heads. In the center, there is a double stair leading over a stone alcove, which has stone vase balusters and a wide moulded stone handrail. At the right end, there is a wide niche with stone voussoirs and a segmental arched head, which contains a brick bench topped with stone.
On the north side, there is a lower wall with seven bays, featuring similar piers topped with stone urns adorned with swags, of which three remain. The south side has four-panelled gate piers with moulded tops and bases that were once topped with urns. Between the central piers, there are ornamental gates with a pediment-shaped top, decorated with swags and festoons. To the left of the gates is a low wall with four bays.
