Description
The War Memorial in the Churchyard of St Michael and St Magdalene Church is a stone structure dedicated in 1920 and designed by the architect Temple Moore. It features a Gothic Revival style with a tall, tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded cap and is topped by a beveled cross. The shaft stands on a stepped base, which is inscribed in Gothic lettering to honor the men of the parish who died in the First World War, listing sixty-three names. The memorial was commissioned by the parish of Easthampstead in June 1919 and dedicated in February 1920. Notably, it does not include names of those who fell in the Second World War, as they are commemorated on a plaque inside the church. This memorial holds significant historical and cultural value, both locally and nationally, and is particularly noteworthy as a work of Temple Moore, a prominent architect of the late Gothic revival.
