Rest Harrow

Rest Harrow is a cottage, now a house, dating from the late 16th century. It has been altered and extended in the 18th century, and again in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted brick and timber framing with brick infill, with an old tile gabled roof. Originally rectangular, with two framed bays, it has since been extended at both ends.

The two-storey and attic house has a ridge chimney with a clay pot. The windows are mostly C19 and C20 casements. The west front is irregular in appearance. The centre section is the oldest part of the building and features two hipped roof dormers with two-light windows, and further two-light and one single-light windows at the first floor level. The ground floor has a two-light window, fitted with wooden shutters, on the left, and two single-light windows on the right. A single bay extension on the right hand side features a platband and has a three-light window on the first floor and a two-light window, which has been altered and fitted with wooden shutters, on the ground floor; this window was brought from another location. An entrance door is located within a gabled, enclosed porch within the left hand extension.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed with rough-hewn timbers, and some principal beams are chamfered with shield stops. The roof is of queen post design, with large tie beams and collars. One tie beam is formed from a tree trunk.
