Description
Mallorys is a cottage that has been converted into a house, originally built in the 16th century and altered in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. The structure features a timber frame with painted brick infill, some areas of painted bricks, and an old tiled gabled roof. It has an L-shaped plan consisting of two framed bays.
The building stands two storeys high and includes a large projecting gable chimney on the left side, along with a 17th-century diagonal shaft chimney at the rear topped with a tall, louvred clay pot. The southeast front, which faces the street, is brick-faced and has a plinth, a plat band at the first floor, and a dentilled cornice. This elevation has three bays with two and three-light casement windows that feature lozenge iron latticed glazing in flush box frames. The northeast front serves as the entrance and has a single bay gable with later applied timber framing. It includes a 20th-century plank entrance door set within a 17th-century porch that has engaged columns and a heavy dentile cornice.
Inside, the ground floor showcases large exposed beams, closely set joists with shield stops, and old plank floors. The hall features 17th-century wainscoting. There is an inglenook chimney in the drawing room and another old brick fireplace in the kitchen. A three-light 17th-century diamond-mullioned window is located on what was once an external wall, now part of the hall. Hill House, which is adjacent to the northwest, is not included in this listing.
