Description

The NAAFI building (Building 9) at Hounslow Barracks is a canteen, reading room, and sergeant's mess constructed in 1875, as signed by Colonel C.B. Ewart from the Royal Engineers. The building has been extended and altered in the early to mid-20th century. It is made of yellow stock brick and features brick lateral stacks on the right side, topped with a slate U-shaped hipped roof.

The exterior is two stories tall and has a window arrangement of three, one, three, one. The front is irregular, with pale brick bands at the ground-floor cills and lintels, segmental-arched window heads, and a patterned band between the floors. The first-floor windows are flat-headed, and there is a bracketed eaves cornice. The left section of the building is set forward, featuring a central entrance bay beneath an ashlar clock tower with a segmental-arched cornice, paired first-floor windows, and a projecting porch with a lean-to roof. Tall metal-paned windows are present throughout. To the right, there is a single-storey block with a five-window return, while the left return includes two large round-arched ground-floor windows in matching recesses.

Inside, the building has a central stair hall with a dogleg stair, plain cornices, and 20th-century iron roof joists. The left-hand ground-floor mess room extends the full depth of the building.

Historically, this building provided canteen and recreation facilities and was part of the barracks' development as one of the double Localisation depots under the Cardwell reforms. It reflects the improved living conditions in army barracks and is included as part of one of the most complete and significant barracks in the country.
