Description
Baber Auxiliary Bridge, located on Staines Road, was built in 1809 for the Trustees of the Brentford Turnpike Road. It is constructed of pink-grey stock brick and features Portland stone coping along the parapet, with stone keystones on each side inscribed with 'Rebuilt 1809'.
Historically, the original Baber (or Beaver) Auxiliary Bridge was commissioned by the Duke of Northumberland to carry the Hounslow-Staines road over a channel of the Isleworth Mill River. This watercourse was created to power mills on the ducal estate and connects to the River Crane nearby. The bridge was inadvertently rebuilt by the trustees of the Brentford Road, who were unaware of the duke's responsibility for it.
