Description

787/0/10130 STAINES ROAD 08-AUG-02 Baber Auxiliary Bridge

II

Baber Auxiliary Bridge, Staines Road. 1809 for the Trustees of the Brentford Turnpike Road. Pink-grey stock brick, Portland stone coping to parapet, stone keystones to each side inscribed 'Rebuilt 1809'. HISTORY: the first Baber (or Beaver) Auxiliary Bridge was erected by the Duke of Northumberland to carry the Hounslow-Staines road over a channel of the Isleworth Mill River, a water course created to power mills on the ducal estate, which joins the River Crane near this point. This bridge was accidentally rebuilt by the trustees of the Brentford Road who were unaware of the duke's responsibility for it.
