Description

SUTTON UPON TERN C.P. A41 (T), Stoke Heath SJ 63 SW (south-west side) SJ 6499 3096 2/114 Milestone approx. 40 - metres to west of Warran Farmhouse.

  • II

Milestone. Late C18 with early c19 alterations. Herringbone-tooled red sandstone with cast-iron-plates. Attached segmental-headed cast-iron plates with superscribed serif lettering: "TO/CHESTER/30/MILES" (left-hand side) and "TO/NEWPORT/10 MILES" (right-hand side). Rectangular plate to base superscribed: "STOKE HEATH". The cast plates are probably early C19 additions as earlier inscriptions are just visible in the stone behind them. This milestone appears to have been reconstructed at some time after accident damage but is included as one of a series. Warran Farmhouse is not included on this list.
