Description

HINSTOCK C.P. A41 (T) SJ 62 NE (south-west SJ 6837 2769 side) 7/32 Milestone approx. - 210 metres to south-east of the Four Crosses Inn

  • II

Milestone. Late c18 with early C19 alterations. Red sandstone with segmental-headed cast-iron plates. Triangular section on square base. Each plate with superscribed serif lettering: "TO/CHESTER/33/MILES" (left- hand side) and "TO/NEWPORT/7 MILES" (right-hand side). Rectangular plate on base obscured by earth at time of survey (March 1986) but is probably lettered "MILLGREEN", the name of the hamlet. The cast plates are probably early C19 additions as earlier inscriptions are just visible in the stone behind them. The Four Crosses Inn is not included on this list.
