Description
This milestone, located approximately 20 metres to the south-west of Number 5, Sweet Appletree, dates from the late 18th century and has some early 19th-century alterations. It is made of red sandstone and features cast-iron plates. The milestone has a triangular shape on a square base, with segmental-headed cast-iron plates attached to it. The left plate reads 'TO / CHESTER / 32 / MILES' and the right plate reads 'TO / NEWPORT / 8 MILES'. The plate on the base is obscured, and the cast-iron plates are likely early 19th-century additions, as earlier inscriptions can still be seen faintly in the stone behind them. Note that Number 5, Sweet Appletree is not included in this listing.
