Description

The Lea Gates is a cottage that was later used as a farm building and is now disused. It dates from around 1600, with possible alterations from the 18th century. The structure is timber framed with red brick nogging, and the right-hand gable end has been rebuilt in dressed red sandstone. The roof is made of corrugated iron. The framing consists of large square panels, with two extending from the sole plate to the wall plate, and short straight corner braces. The building has a single-cell end lobby-entry plan and is one storey high with a gable-lit attic. There is an integral brick end stack on the right side, which features weathering.

The front has two central open panels that may have been a former door and window or were altered when the cottage transitioned to an agricultural use. There is a boarded door to the right. The left-hand gable end contains a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. A one-storey lean-to addition is attached to the right-hand gable end, featuring a brick corner stack and a door at the front.

Inside, there is a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops and plain joists. A large open fireplace has dressed sandstone reveals and a chamfered and stopped wooden lintel. There is a chamfered corner post and likely 19th-century stud partitions on each floor. A staircase is located in the left-hand front corner. The roof features a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and purlins with straight wind braces. The right-hand end wall was probably rebuilt in sandstone in the 18th century.
