Description
The Bendles is a mid-18th century farmhouse located in Stoke Upon Tern. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a plat band, eaves band, a toothed-brick eaves cornice, and parapeted gable ends that include stone coping and moulded kneelers. There are integral brick end stacks and a central gabled eaves dormer with a two-light wooden casement window. The facade consists of five bays with segmental-headed wooden and metal cross windows, some of which have 20th-century wooden cills. The central entrance is a boarded door topped by a two-part rectangular overlight. There are signs of a former gabled or pedimented porch, hood, or doorcase indicated by a break in the plat band. A late 20th-century glazed lean-to porch has been added, along with a circa 1900 two-storey lean-to addition on the right side. The rear of the building has three bays featuring plat bands, a central staircase window, additional blocked windows, and a blocked central door. Each gable end has pairs of attic windows. Inside, there is an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, a turned foot newel, and a moulded handrail, along with applied half-balusters to the square half-landing newels. An 18th-century door with two raised and fielded panels and H-and-L hinges is also present.
