Description

Hoarlake Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse, which was refaced in the early 20th century. It is located in Hinstock, Cheshire, and was shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Warlake. The original construction is timber-framed with wattle and daub infill between dressed red sandstone plinths, and has been subsequently refronted with pebble-dashed brick. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The timber framing is characterized by small square panels, arranged three from the sole plate to the wall plate, with short straight corner braces. The building follows a baffle-entry plan of two framed bays. It is one storey with an attic. A pair of hipped-roofed dormers, dating from around 1900, are visible with two-light metal casements. A central brick ridge stack is present. The front elevation originally contained two windows, but has since been altered; a late 20th-century two-light wooden casement has been inserted into an early 20th-century opening with a segmental head, and a projecting flat-roofed canted bay now extends to the right, featuring three glazing-bar sashes. A roughly central boarded door is set within a gabled pebble-dashed brick porch. The gable ends display exposed collar and tie-beam trusses incorporating queen struts and V-struts. A 20th-century one-storey lean-to addition extends from the left side of the building. Although the interior was not inspected, former occupants in March 1983 reported that the front wall consists of a brick skin, which conceals the original 17th-century timber framing.
