Description

The Coach House and The Paddocks is a stable block and coach house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from around 1721, with alterations and additions made around 1857, and some changes in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with red sandstone ashlar dressings and features a hipped plain tile roof. It is designed in a U-shape and has two storeys.

The east front showcases chamfered stone quoins at the corners and flanking the central break, along with a stone floor band and a dentil brick eaves cornice. The central break has a three-bay triangular-pedimented gable with returned moulded stone coping and an octagonal wooden clock face in the tympanum, positioned above a moulded stone cill supported by scrolled brackets. There is an octagonal wooden cupola featuring round arches with moulded imposts and keys, a moulded cornice, and an ogee lead dome. The facade is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay pattern, with 18th-century windows that have fixed 20th-century lights, moulded stone cills, and gauged brick segmental heads topped with raised panelled keystones.

The central entrance has a 20th-century boarded door with an overlight, framed by a segmental-headed rusticated surround and a gauged-brick arch above. The right-hand return front consists of five bays, with recessed first-floor oculi. The large ground-floor former coach-house doorways are flanked by rusticated stone piers and feature painted segmental brick heads with raised triple keystones. Two openings on the right retain pairs of large six-panelled doors with L-hinges, while three on the left have been blocked in the 20th century with new windows and a door inserted. At the rear, there is a one-storey wing with stone quoins and a dentil brick eaves cornice, which includes a segmental-headed window and a keyed segmental-headed doorway. The interior has not been inspected. This building was formerly the stable block and coach house for Buntingsdale Hall.
