CHARLTON WAY War Memorial and attached railings and piers
GV II
War memorial with attached railings and piers. Circa 1920. Classical style. Built of Portland stone. About 12 feet in height. Moulded cornice, three panels divided by Ionic pilasters with double pilasters at the end on plinth and stone step. Central panels bears the arms of the Borough of Greenwich and is incribed "Borough of Greenwich in glorious and grateful memory of the men of this borough who gave their lives in the Great War. The number exceeds 1600 and their names are recorded in a roll of honor deposited in this memorial." Side panels inscribed "1914" and "1918". The plinth is inscribed "Also in grateful remembrance of those residents of the Borough who gave their lives to the country during the War 1939-1945". On either side are attached curved sections of cast iron railings with dog rails and urn principals on stone plinth, terminating in stock brick piers with Portland stone plinths and cornices.
