Description

The war memorial with attached railings and piers, located on Charlton Way, was built around 1920 in a classical style and is made of Portland stone. It stands approximately 12 feet tall and features a moulded cornice. The memorial has three panels separated by Ionic pilasters, with double pilasters at each end, all resting on a plinth and stone step. The central panel displays the arms of the Borough of Greenwich and is inscribed with the words: "Borough of Greenwich in glorious and grateful memory of the men of this borough who gave their lives in the Great War. The number exceeds 1600 and their names are recorded in a roll of honor deposited in this memorial." The side panels are inscribed with "1914" and "1918". The plinth also bears the inscription: "Also in grateful remembrance of those residents of the Borough who gave their lives to the country during the War 1939-1945". Flanking the memorial are curved sections of cast iron railings with dog rails and urn principals on stone plinths, which end in stock brick piers topped with Portland stone plinths and cornices.
