Description

The war memorial was built in 1924 by Lidstel and Brammel. It is constructed of limestone with marble plaques.

The memorial consists of a hexagonal limestone pedestal supporting a faceted column. Gothic niches are at the head of the column, surmounted by a Celtic cross. Black marble plaques on the pedestal's sides bear the names of those who died, along with dedications reading: THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY MAKE THEM TO BE NUMBERED WITH THY SAINTS IN GLORY EVERLASTING and, 1939-1945 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE. The memorial stands on a hexagonal stone plinth of four tiers.

The memorial was designed as a dedication to villagers who died in World War I, their names listed on the plaques. Names of those who fell in World War II were added later. The memorial was unveiled in April 1924 by The Duke of Portland and is located in The Square, a local meeting place. Following storm damage in January 1925, the column was rebuilt with metal reinforcing rods, resulting in a slightly reduced height. Repointing work was carried out in 1991.

The memorial is designated at Grade II for its historic interest as a commemoration of those who died in both World Wars, and for its architectural interest as a simple, well-detailed tribute displaying good craftsmanship. It also possesses group value with the nearby Grade II listed village pump.
