SK 57 NW PARISH OF WHITWELL OFF BROAD LANE 2/165 (North Side) 26.8.65 The Birks Farmhouse II

Farmhouse. Mid C18. Coursed squared sandstone and sandstone ashlar. Welsh slate roof with stone gable stacks. Two storeys and attics. Banded quoins, plain first floor band, moulded cornice and blocking course. West elevation of 1-3-1 bays, the centre three advanced and pedimented, with banded quoins. Central doorway with moulded doorcase and bracketted pediment. Raised and fielded panelled door with rectangular overlight. Flanked by glazing bar sashes in plain ashlar surrounds. The outer bays have similar sashes. The first floor has a central glazing bar sash in plain ashlar surround, flanked by blind windows with similar surrounds, and flanked in turn by glazing bar sashes in plain ashlar surrounds. The interior has an C18 dogleg staircase, closed string heavy turned balusters and moulded handrail. The cellar has a moulded four-centred arched stone doorway and three blocked 2-light recessed and chamfered mullioned windows. In first floor rooms are two stone bolection moulded fireplaces and a cupboard with raised and fielded panelled door.
