Description

The Birks Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse constructed from coursed squared sandstone and sandstone ashlar, topped with a Welsh slate roof and stone gable stacks. It stands two storeys high with attics and features banded quoins, a plain first floor band, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course.

The west elevation consists of a 1-3-1 bay arrangement, with the central three bays being advanced and pedimented, also showcasing banded quoins. The central doorway is framed by a moulded doorcase and a bracketed pediment, leading to a raised and fielded panelled door with a rectangular overlight. This doorway is flanked by glazing bar sash windows in plain ashlar surrounds, while the outer bays also contain similar sash windows. On the first floor, there is a central glazing bar sash in a plain ashlar surround, flanked by blind windows with similar surrounds, and further flanked by additional glazing bar sashes in plain ashlar surrounds.

Inside, the farmhouse features an 18th-century dogleg staircase with a closed string, heavy turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The cellar includes a moulded four-centred arched stone doorway and three blocked 2-light recessed and chamfered mullioned windows. First floor rooms contain two stone bolection moulded fireplaces and a cupboard with a raised and fielded panelled door.
