Description

Nos 34 and 35, known as Sotheby's, is a building originally constructed as a house in the early 18th century, which was altered in the mid-19th century to serve as auction rooms. The exterior is faced with stucco and topped with a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with a mansard attic and features four windows across the upper floors above the ground floor.

The central entrance is designed in a gothic style and includes a porch with a gable that displays a piece of Egyptian sculpture dating to around 1320 BC. The entrance is flanked by broad windows with segmental arched splayed reveals. The upper floors have sash windows that reveal late 18th-century glazing bars, with the first-floor windows featuring cornices set above flat heads, and a cornice and blocking course above the second floor. Inside, the building retains mid-19th-century and early 20th-century top-lit auction rooms.
