Description
47 Maddox Street, including workshops to the rear, was built in 1892 as commercial premises designed by W.A. Williams for tailor William Cooling. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick, with the facade entirely faced in rich biscuit-coloured ceramic brick and tile, showcasing a free Flemish style, along with York stone, Portland stone, and red brick dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof and a rear wall made of white glazed brick.
The structure stands five storeys tall. The original shop front on the ground floor features small panes above the transom and a window that curves to the left-hand entrance, made of iron with mahogany fittings. The fanlights are made of brilliant cut glass. Above the shop front, there is a single canted bay window that jetties out to the first and second floors, with a balustrade in front of the third floor, which has a pair of round-headed casement windows. The building is topped with a tall Dutch gable crowned by a segmental pediment with a finial, flanked by a pair of heraldic beasts. Heavy cast iron railings enclose the basement area.
Inside, the shop ceiling features exuberant ornamental fibrous plaster and plaster moulded cornices. The contemporary workshops to the rear are similarly detailed but more plainly. The building continues to be used for its original function.
