Description
Nos 8 to 10 St George Street are terrace houses built in the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early and mid-19th century. They are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and have slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys and include basements, each featuring three windows across their facades.
No 8 has an early to mid-19th century timber shop front that includes pilasters and a bracketed cornice above the fascia. No 9 features a mid-20th century shop front but retains a house door to the right, which is semi-circular arched with pilaster jambs, a radial glazed fanlight, and a six-panel door. No 10 also has a mid-20th century shop front.
The upper floors of the buildings have windows with red brick gauged arches and window dressings, with Nos 9 and 10 featuring segmental arches. The sash windows mainly have later 19th century glazing, while those of Nos 8 and 9 are set in flush frames. Nos 9 and 10 have a brick plat band at the second floor, and the parapets are topped with coping. Notably, No 8 has a plaque commemorating the formation of the Artists Rifles at this location in 1860.
