Description

15 St George Street is a Grade II* listed terrace town house built around 1724. The building features stuccoed brick and stone with a rusticated ground floor and a slate roof. It stands three storeys high, with a basement and a dormered attic, and is five windows wide, symmetrically arranged around the doorway. The stone doorcase is adorned with three-quarter Doric columns, a mutule pediment, and an archivolt on imposts. The windows have revealed glazing bar sashes in architrave surrounds, with the ground floor featuring reinstated sashes from the 1970s. The first floor window heads display alternating segmental and straight pediments, while a stone mutule cornice sits above the second floor, topped with a blocking course. A stone balustrade encloses the basement area.

Inside, the house retains fine original features, including panelling and doorcases in the ground floor hall, which has a three-bay arcade. The ground floor right-hand room showcases marble Corinthian pilasters on the chimneypiece wall, along with a marble chimney piece framed by original minor and ornamental painting in a gilded festooned Rococo style. The upper floors have been altered following fire damage. This building is part of Lord Scarborough's Hanover Square development but adheres to the West End town house style of the period, contrasting with the predominantly German aesthetic of its neighboring structures.
