Description

Nos 16 and 17 St George Street are terrace town houses built in the early 18th century, around 1717-1720, with some early 20th-century shop alterations. They are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and No 16 is stuccoed and painted, topped with slate roofs. The buildings feature rusticated stone quoin piers on either side of the fronts and rise four storeys with basements. Each house has four windows across, with some ground floor windows widened for shop fronts. The entrances are centrally and off-centre located, with doorcases that have rusticated surrounds and moulded cornices. The windows are revealed sash types, with later 19th-century glazing and cambered heads in stone surrounds, linked vertically by rusticated aprons. A stone dentil cornice is present at the third floor, along with a blocking course.

No 17 was formerly occupied by Morris & Co, which has a plaque noting the foundation of the firm by William Morris. Inside No 16, there is a front stair compartment that rises to the first floor, featuring cut string stone steps with wrought iron scrolled banisters and panelled walls. An Ionic pilastered archway connects the first-floor gallery landing to the dog-leg back stairs, although the decoration has been altered in the late 18th century and restored. No 17 also has a front compartment stairwell with cut string stairs and possibly reset ornate wrought iron banisters, along with a panelled dado. The ground floor front and back rooms, now used as a shop, are divided by a Greek Revival late 18th-century Ionic columned screen. The first-floor drawing room boasts late 18th-century Adam style plasterwork on the ceiling.
